STILL BLUE. Tab Baldwin won't have to get used to any new colors when he takes over as Ateneo head coach.
As the old adage goes, Ateneo de Manila University saved the best for last.
The Blue Eagles are no longer the lone remaining UAAP member school without a head coach after officially appointing Tab Baldwin to the position on Monday.
“We are pleased to announce the appointment of Thomas Anthony ‘Tab’ Baldwin as head coach of our men’s basketball team,” the Katipunan-based school said in a statement.
The statement continued, “We thank coach Tab for his generosity in taking on this mission of coaching and forming our young men. We begin our preparations for (next season) right away this December and we look forward to working hard for the championship.”
As already reported, along with his new post, the American-New Zealander will still serve as head coach of Gilas Pilipinas and consultant for PBA team TNT.
Following the development, the most prestigious collegiate league in the country no longer has any coaching vacancies. De La Salle University signed NCAA champion coach Aldin Ayo while Adamson University inked multi-titled mentor Franz Pumaren prior to Ateneo’s move.
Katipunan was in need of a new mentor after Bo Perasol’s contract was not renewed at the end of the recently-concluded season. Baldwin inherits a lineup that will have to adjust to life without Kiefer Ravena and Von Pessumal, but will still have loads of talent in the form of CJ Perez and Matt Nieto, among others.
