NOTHING NEW.

Much time has passed since the last gameday in the UAAP 78 Juniors Basketball Tournament, but apparently, not much has changed when Nazareth School of National University meets Ateneo de Manila High School.

John Lloyd Clemente and Justine Baltazar once again toyed with the Blue Eaglets’ guard-heavy lineup to give the Bullpups an easy 81-69 win on Saturday at the San Juan Arena.

Wide-bodied wing Clemente tallied 21 points and 13 rebounds and not to be outdone, towering center Baltazar posted his own 15-point, 20-rebound double-double.

Ateneo’s usually fluid offense stalled in the initial two quarters as Baltazar utilized every second he was on the floor to make his presence felt in the paint. The Pampanga native already had 14 rebounds and three blocks all while anchoring the defense that forced Jolo Mendoza into missing all his eight attempts by the half.

Mendoza came alive in the second half, but by then, the Bullpups were no longer interested in relinquishing control. The reigning runners-up bullied the defending champion on the glass, 60-38, to stay unblemished through eight games.

Mendoza, Gian Mamuyac, and SJ Belangel, all guards, merged for 50 of their team’s total as the Eaglets suffered their third defeat in eight matches.

With their loss, Ateneo handed over solo second to De La Salle Zobel who razed Far Eastern University-Diliman, 78-58.

Aljun Melecio turned in his second 40-point game of the season with 41 markers to go along with 10 rebounds in the Junior Archers’ sixth win in eight games. Kenji Roman had 14 points and 13 rebounds to lead the effort for the Baby Tamaraws who dropped to fifth place with a 4-4 slate.

In other results, Adamson High School tied the Eaglets for the third and fourth spots after hacking out a 66-61 victory against the University of the Philippine Integrated School while University of Sto. Tomas kept University of the East winless, 95-94.
