WE MEET AGAIN. New DLSU coach Aldin Ayo and future Green Archer Aljun Melecio go way back to 2012.
Two new faces who comprise Taft Avenue’s hope for a return to glory next season were both at the San Juan Arena on Saturday.
But they weren’t there for De La Salle University.
Scoring dynamo Aljun Melecio was there to lead his De La Salle Zobel Junior Archers as they continued their campaign in the UAAP 78 Juniors Basketball Tournament.
On the other hand, new DLSU coach Aldin Ayo was there to simply watch the talented kid who he once coached in the past.
Asked if he, and assistant coach Louie Gonzales, were scouting someone, Ayo told ABS-CBN Sports, “Tinignan lang si Aljun.”
The connection between the two was created back in 2012 when Ayo, then only a coach starting his career, had Melecio, then only a kid with loads of talent, on his team in the Jr. NBA. As the Junior Archer noted, “Matagal na talaga kaming magkakilala ni coach.”
The scoring dynamo narrated that he had a conversation with his new-old coach after the game. Sharing what they talked about, he said, “Sabi niya, ‘Tapusin mo muna yan.’”
Ayo was referring to the ongoing season where Melecio and DLSZ find themselves in pretty good shape at second-place with most of the second round still to come.
And what did the future Green Archer say in response? “Sabi ko, ‘Opo, coach. Kita-kita na lang tayo pagkapanalo na.’”
