DLSZ stays second behind Melecio; Bullpups still unscathed
OOPS, I DID IT AGAIN. Aljun Melecio's back-to-back hits shook off Ateneo and solidified DLSZ's grasp of the second spot.

STANDINGS

NU 10-0
DLSZ 8-2
Ateneo 6-4
Adamson 6-4
FEU-Diliman 5-5
UST 3-7
UPIS 2-8
UE 0-10

With Ateneo de Manila High School breathing down the necks of his De La Salle Zobel all while locking him up, far, far away from another 40-point outing, Aljun Melecio still took the ball for himself in the endgame on Wednesday at the San Juan Arena.

From just past the halfcourt line, the scoring dynamo rushed forward only to pull-up from the top of the key and drill a triple that found nothing but net.

The trey proved to be the blow that broke the back of the Blue Eaglets for a 80-73 decision in favor of the Junior Archers that strengthened their stranglehold on the second spot in the UAAP 78 Juniors Basketball Tournament.

Playing catch up for most of the game, Ateneo pulled to within 71-72 inside the last two minutes. It was at that point that Melecio told his teammates to ride him and took and made the cold-blooded trey.

After a defensive stop, the senior guard did the same exact thing just for good measure as the Junior Archers stayed ahead for good. Proving his confidence in his self, before the back-to-back hits, he was 1/6 from long-range.

“Chamba lang. Gusto talaga manalo e,” a beaming Melecio told ABS-CBN Sports after the game. He wound up with 22 points, 11 rebounds, and five assists as DLSZ swept the season series against their archrivals.

Shaun Ildefonso and BJ Andrade had 16 and 14 points, respectively, to lead the effort for the defending champions who dropped into a tie for the third and fourth places at 6-4.

While the archrivals were duking it out, Nazareth School of National University remained perfect and atop the leaderboard following an easy 67-51 triumph over Far Eastern University-Diliman.

The Bullpups started strong with a 18-8 opening salvo and never looked back for their 10th win in a row. The Pampanga connection once again starred with Justine Baltazar tallying a near triple-double of 15 points, 11 rebounds, and eight assists while John Lloyd Clemente fired 18 points.

In other results, Adamson High School destroyed University of the East, 80-26, while University of the Philippines Integrated School scored their second win in 10 games at the expense of University of Sto. Tomas, 82-71.

All 13 Baby Falcons contributed in scoring to move their squad to solo fourth at 6-4. Meanwhile, the Tiger Cubs, Junior Maroons, and Junior Warriors remained at the bottom three of the standings after their matches.
