WINGMAN. Gian Mamuyac is more than capable of carrying the load for Ateneo while King Blue Eaglet Jolo Mendoza is still mending his left ankle.
Don't fear Katipunan, your King Blue Eaglet is all well and good.
Now more than a month removed from sustaining what would become a nagging injury, Jolo Mendoza finally looked like the Finals MVP of last season as he swished 25 points to lead Ateneo de Manila High School back to the right track.
Four games ago, Mendoza tweaked his left ankle. He sat out one assignment and in the other three, looked out of sorts as the Blue Eaglets stumbled to a 1-3 record.
Now he has again flashed his fine form, the King Eaglet said, “Okay na yung ankle ko. I’m 100 percent na.”
He quickly added, however, “I hope.”
In coach Joe Silva’s view, however, his top gun is yet to get back to 100 percent and the team is in no rush to pile on a heavy load on him at all.
With this in mind,, Katipunan, still has nothing to fear because their King Blue Eaglet doesn't have to do this all by himself – he’s got a pretty good wingman in Gian Mamuyac.
In fact, while Mendoza was mending his foot, it was Mamuyac who stepped in as the steadying force for Ateneo. Asked about him taking charge, however, the wiry wingman modestly said, “Sabi lang ng mga coach, wala kaming pakialam kung sino, basta merong magko-contribute.”
Pressed about the matter, Mamuyac simply said, “Kelangan ko lang mag-step up talaga kasi wala yung best player namin on the team.”
