Golden Tigresses positive that Season 78 is UST's redemption
POSITIVE THINKING. The Tigresses are under pressure to finally make the Final Four this year and the team is more focused than ever to realize their playoff potential.

Number of Women’s Volleyball Titles: 15

Season 77 record: 6-8 (T-4th)

Head coach: Emilio "Kung Fu" Reyes

Season 78 is supposed to be the year the UST Golden Tigresses finally get restore Espana's glory days in volleyball.

Their veteran core is focused and tested after years of painful lessons. They have a new coach and the general consensus is that UST is making the playoffs especially after the Tigresses came so close in Season 77.

And then team captain Pam Lastimosa went down with an ACL injury in practice last November. What now?

Well, never fear because new team captain EJ Laure together with seniors Jessey de Leon and Carmela Tunay, with the guidance of head coach Emilio "Kung Fu" Reyes, are out to prevent a lost season for the Tigresses.

Particularly for the veterans, they are not letting this season go without a huge fight.

"This will really be big for us kasi since recently nga na wala kami sa Final Four, I think this is the time na mag-step up na talaga lahat para i-prove yung kaya naming gawin," de Leon told ABS-CBN Sports.

With coach Kung Fu in tow, the Tigresses want to be mentally tougher in dealing what looks like a very competitive season.

And the new coach's influence on the team is already taking effect even before the season began as the Tigresses continue to learn how to survive without Lastimosa, UST's heart and soul for the past couple of seasons.

"Focus lang sa positive. Imbes na mag-dwell kami dun sa problem, imbes na maging sad kami about it, ginawa namin we look for a solution and dun kami nag-focus. Train kami harder to fill the loss [of Pam for the season]," de Leon said.

"Hindi na namin kailangan magdrama or mag-dwell sa pangit. Hanapin na kaagad yung solution," Tunay added on the effects of having coach Kung Fu on the team.

Pretty much like the 2008 USA Olympic basketball team, Season 78 for the Tigresses is all about redemption.

The sense of urgency is there and it looks like it's now or never for UST. For the current batch at least.

"I believe it's the biggest [season]. Last chance na to redeem yung mga sarili namin and i-redeem din yung team kasi it has been so many years na nalaglag kami sa Final Four na hindi naman nakasanayan ng UST," Tunay said. "Siguro it's about time na our batch redeem ourselves."

Season 78 is supposed to be the year the UST Golden Tigresses finally get restore Espana's glory days in volleyball.

They might just pull it off and more.

Upside: Intact core. Except from the unfortunate loss of Lastimosa from the UAAP volleyball plague - that nasty ACL injury bug - the Tigresses are expected to clinch a spot in the top four.

Downside: UST has the same lineup as last year under Odjie Mamon, can Reyes do a better job of steering this squad back to the Final Four?
