University of the Philippines and University of East kick off the 78th UAAP women's volleyball hostilities.
The chemistry of University of the Philippines’ mix of veterans and rookies will be tested Sunday when the Lady Maroons begin their campaign in the 78th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
With a promising batch of recruits and with the return of Season 76 Best Blocker Kathy Bersola, expectations are high for the Jerry Yee-mentored Lady Maroons.
UP will take on a very hungry University of the East, which is out to halt three consecutive years of futility, in the division’s curtain raiser set at 2:00 p.m. that will air live on ABS-CBN Sports+Action Channel 23 and ABS-CBN Sports+Action HD Channel 166 and via livestream at sports.abs-cbn.com/livestream/uaap.
Hope Christian School’s Justine Dorog, Angeli Basarte and Ma. Lina Isabel Molde as well as Sta. Cruz Academy-Lubao, Pampanga’s Diana Carlos will debut for UP.
These freshmen delivered in the offseason when they led the Lady Maroons to a third place finish in the V-League Reinforced Conference but are yet to show their mettle in the collegiate rank.
“Malamang may pressure (sa kanila) pero para sa akin hindi nakaka-affect sa kanila kasi kahit rookies lang sila sobrang mature na nila mag-isip and hindi na sila nagpapaapekto,” Bersola, who is fully recovered from a knee injury she suffered in the middle of last year that prematurely ended her season, said of their freshmen.
Aside from Bersola, other returnees are power-hitting Nicole Tiamzon, Jewel Lai, Marian Buitre, Princess Gaiser, Arielle Estranero and Vina Alinas.
Seeking to end a string of winless seasons, Shaya Adorador, Jasmine Adorador, Angelica Dacaymat, Roselle Baliton and last season's co-Rookie of the Year winner Kat Arado will spearhead the Lady Warriors along with newcomer Seth Rodriguez.
The Lady Warriors tasted its last victory four seasons ago when it downed the National University Lady Bulldogs, 20-25, 25-16, 21-25, 25-9, 15-9, on January 28, 2012 before UE plunged into a 45-game losing slump.
