Alyssa Valdez knows how talented EJ Laure is, so it's time to get acquainted with the new UST captain before she starts what is looking like a breakout season.
We all knew EJ Laure was destined to take over the UST Golden Tigresses, we just didn't know it would be happening now already.
With team captain Pam Lastimosa lost for UAAP Season 78 afer a torn ACL, Laure's role as UST savior has been fast-tracked as the Tigresses try to finally fulfill their potential following years of frustration.
And it's a good thing EJ, a champion during high school for UST, is more than ready.
Just ask the seniors.
"Actually baligtad kasi she [EJ] helps me carry the team," Carmela Tunay told ABS-CBN Sports. "Si EJ ever since naman na nag-start siya sa team talagang nadadala niya yung sarili niya and nagdadala siya ng teammates. She's not considering herself as a young player na kasi captain na siya, may factor sa kanya yun eh na 'di na ako bata kailangan ko mag-step up."
Jessey de Leon, whose decision to return to the team became a lot easier after a more favorable academic schedule, believes that Laure taking over now is a great foundation towards UST's future.
Laure is only entering her sophomore season.
"It's a good practice for the next years to come and EJ is mature enough to fill the captain responbility," she said.
Meanwhile the reigning co-rookie of the year is brushing off the title of captain, noting that it's nothing more than just added responsibility.
"Second year pa lang ako tapos naging team captain na, ayun mas dagdag yun sa balikat ko," Laure said. "Hindi naman namin iniisip na mahirap, iniisip namin is to enjoy inside the court. It's for UST naman eh."
Not that being captain is new for Laure, the daughter of PBA player Eddie is used to be in the spotlight.
Playing for coach Kung Fu Reyes in the UST high school, Laure capped an MVP Season by leading the Junior Tigresses to the UAAP title in Season 76.
A sensational stint as a V-League guest player later, Laure won the rookie of the year award in Season 77 as the Tigresses came one set short of returning to the Final Four.
With Reyes taking over coaching duties for the Golden Tigresses in Season 78, Laure and company are looking to finally knock the playoff door open.
If you didn't already know the name EJ Laure, now is the perfect time to get acquainted with the player that impressed even the great Alyssa Valdez.
Well the Queen Eagle should know, Laure basically inherited her spot in UST.
Laure and the Golden Tigresses open their season against the Adamson Lady Falcons on Wednesday at the San Juan Arena. Catch the UAAP Season 78 Volleyball tournament on ABS-CBN Sports + Action and log-on to sports.abs-cbn.com for daily updates and livestreaming.
