Eaglets, Baby Tams complete playoff cast
EARLY END. With one gameday still to play in the elimination round, we already know who our playoff participants will be.

STANDINGS
NU 13-0
DLSZ 11-2
Ateneo 9-4
FEU-Diliman 8-5
Adamson 6-7
UST 3-10
UPIS 2-11
UE 0-13

The door to the Final Four of the UAAP 78 Juniors Basketball Tournament has now been closed and shut tight.

Last through the door are Ateneo de Manila High School and Far Eastern University-Diliman who secured the remaining two semifinals seeds following separate wins on Wednesday at the San Juan Arena.

The Blue Eaglets buried University of Sto. Tomas in the middle quarters for an 80-57 decision. Ateneo outscored their opponents, 49-33, in the second and third peroods as Jolo Mendoza fired 14 points to spearhead an offense that registered a 41 percent clip from the field.

With a 9-4 win-loss card, the defending champions are now assured of at least a tiebreaker for the third-seed. “Ang goal na namin talaga ngayon is to make the Final Four and see what we can do fromthere,” coach Joe Silva told ABS-CBN Sports

Rounding out the playoff participants, the Baby Tamaraws booked their return to the playoffs via an 81-71 triumph over University of the Philippines Integrated School.

Eric Jabel came out of nowhere to break out with 22 points and eight rebounds as FEU-Diliman established a double-digit lead at the half which they protected until the final buzzer. Just one game behind, the Baby Tamaraws could make things complicated for Ateneo with a win in their matchup next Saturday.

FEU-Diliman’s path towards the playoffs was made clearer after Adamson High School dropped their third game in a row, this time against De La Salle Zobel, 47-35.

In an ugly game that saw both teams shooting below 25 percent from the field, the Junior Archers rode a 21-3 final frame to break away from their opponents. Aljun Melecio led the way with 14 points, but also missed all but four of his field goals.

Still, with their 11th triumph in 13 tries, DLSZ is now assured of the second-seed and last twice-to-beat advantage in the Final Four – which they will try to set in stone when they meet undefeated Nazareth School of National University on Saturday.

NU is still marching towards an outright Finals berth after pulverizing University of the East, 94-60. Justine Baltazar was unreachable as he picked out 16 points, 16 rebounds, and three blocks while all 15 Bullpups fielded in contributed in the scoring column.

At 13-0, NU is one win away from an elimination round sweep that would entail stepladder playoffs among the second- to fourth-seeds.

Regardless of their final assignments on Saturday, UE, UPIS, and UST will finish at the bottom three of the standings.
