The young University of the Philippines squad will be tested against the veteran roster of De La Salle University.
University of the Philippines and De La Salle University clash in an explosive battle Saturday for the early lead in the 78th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.
The rookie-laden Lady Maroons are hoping to hurdle its first acid test against the seasoned Lady Spikers in the showdown set at 2:00 p.m. that will air live over ABS-CBN Sports+Action Channel 23, ABS-CBN Sports+Action HD Channel 166 and via livestream at sports.abs-cbn.com/livestream/uaap.
UP behind its highly-touted rookies Isa Molde, Justine Dorog and Diana Carlos with veterans Kathy Bersola and Nicole Tiamzon dominated the University of the East Lady Warriors, 25-20, 25-13, 25-21, last Sunday to open their campaign on a high note.
But this time the Lady Maroons are facing a battle-hardened team with a championship pedigree.
“La Salle mahirap kalaban ‘yan. Nandoon pa rin ang psychological advantage (nila sa amin),” said UP coach Jerry Yee, whose squad was swept by the Taft-based spikers last year in the two-round eliminations.
The mentor admitted that his team’s maturity and composure will be tested against DLSU, which is fresh from 29-27, 25-23, 25-20, victory over Far Eastern University last Wednesday.
“Kahit na merong nawala o meron din silang mga rookies, mas matanda ang game nila kaysa sa amin,” he added.
Ara Galang showed a glimpse of her vintage form in her first game after 11 months of layoff due to a left knee injury that prematurely ended her campaign last season, scoring all her 10 points from kills versus the Lady Tamaraws.
The open hitter together with fellow graduating seniors Mika Reyes, Carol Cerveza and Kim Fajardo as well as Christine Joy Soyud and Mary Joy Baron are expected to deliver once again for the Ramil de Jesus-mentored squad.
