Bullpups finish off elims sweep by feasting on Jr. Archers
BULLY BASKETBALL. Just like they have all season long, NU used their size to overwhelm their opponents.

STANDINGS
NU 14-0
DLSZ 11-3
Ateneo 10-4
FEU-Diliman 8-6
Adamson 6-7 last game ongoing
UST 3-10 last game ongoing
UPIS 3-11
UE 0-14

Only one team stood in front of Nazareth School of National University and an automatic advance into the Finals of the UAAP 78 Juniors Basketball Tournament: second-running De La Salle Zobel.

Yet again showcasing their strength, the Bullpups rushed head-on and manhandled the Junior Archers for an 80-57 decision on Saturday at the San Juan Arena.

Another resounding result has Jeff Napa and his boys holding an immaculate 14-0 slate – sending them straight into the Finals with a thrice-to-beat advantage. “Masaya ako para sa mga bata. At least yung pinaghirapan namin all throughout the year, konti na lang makukuha na namin,” an uncharacteristically jovial Napa said.

NU left no doubt that they are the class of the league as they dominated in inside scoring, 54-20, and in rebounding, 51-36. Much of that had to do with Justine Baltazar who was still unreachable and picked out 18 points and 18 rebounds.

The top two teams were dead even at 16 after the first quarter where Aljun Melecio poured in 10 points. DLSZ’s scoring dynamo was checked the rest of the way, however, and was only able to add eight more points as his team wound up shooting just 30 percent from the field.

Melecio still had 18 points, but the Junior Archers had no answer for the Bullpups’ size. Even with their third loss in 14 games, the boys from Alabang still have a twice-to-best advantage in the stepladder playoffs.

Ateneo de Manila High School  garnered a lot more momentum for the stepladder playoffs after rolling over Far Eastern University-Diliman, 78-53.

Jolo Mendoza scored 17 points built on a perfect 3/3 clip from deep to show the way to a 10-4 record for the Blue Eaglets. The Baby Tamaraws were blown out from the get-go and fell behind, 47-21, at the half.

The final score raised Ateneo to the third-seed at 10-4 and dropped FEU-Diliman to the fourth-seed at 8-6 to finish the elimination round. Their seeding will not matter, however, as they will go head-to-head again in a do-or-die duel on Wednesday in the first phase of the next round.

Meanwhile, University of the Philippines Integrated School sent University of the East to their second straight winless season via a 99-79 victory.

Graduating Javi Gomez de Liano posted a career-best 37 points to go along with 11 rebounds while fellow senior Allane Barles added his own 24-point, 10-rebound double-double in the Junior Maroons’ third win of the season.
