Jaja Santiago led the National University Lady Bulldogs to a four-set win over Adamson University.
National University fought its way back from a set down to beat the Adamson University Lady Falcons, 17-25, 25-20, 25-20, 25-20 and rebound from an opening day setback Saturday in the 78th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.
Six-foor-5 Jaja Santiago registered 20 points coming from 18 kills, including the match-clinching off the block hit, with a block kill and service ace for the Lady Bulldogs, who tied their victim and University of the Philippines at 1-1 win-loss record.
NU took advantage of Santiago’s height to attack the much smaller Lady Falcons hinged on playmaker Rica Diolan’s superb sets. The rookie setter had 38 excellent sets.
“Noon pa man noong una akong dumating d’yan sa NU, hanggang ngayon, lagi kong ini-emphasize sa kanila na ibigay n'yo ng ibigay kay Jaja, malaki ‘yan eh, 6’5” ‘yan eh. Hindi ‘yan basta-basta maabot,” said head coach Roger Gorayeb. “Eh ‘yung setter niya (na si Diolan) nagtuluy-tuloy na (maganda ang bigay) kaya hindi ko na inilabas."
Team captain Myla Pablo scored 13 points while Jorelle Singh had 11 markers for NU, which bounced back from a 21-25, 19-25, 14-25, defeat at the hands of defending champion Ateneo de Manila last week.
Adamson had more attack points, 48-45 and kill blocks, 9-4, compared to the Lady Falcons but their 39 errors did them in.
Jessica Galanza was held to 17 points, 11 markers short of her career-high when the Lady Falcons defeated the University of Sto. Tomas Golden Tigresses in five grueling sets.
May Roque scored 12 while Mylene Paat and Mary Joy Dacoron had 11 markers each for the Lady Falcons.
