FEU takes first win, sends UE deeper in the cellar
Far Eastern University bounced back from an opening day setback in a four-set win over University of the East.

Far Eastern University snatched its first win of the season sans top hitter Bernadeth Pons against the University of the East Lady Warriors 25-18, 25-11, 21-25, 25-14, Sunday in the 78th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.

The Lady Tamaraws barged in the win column after dropping their season opener last Wednesday against De La Salle University to join University of the Philippines, Adamson and National University at 1-1 win-loss record.

Heather Guino-o and Toni Basas paced FEU with 15 points each to fill in the scoring void left by Pons, who was at the venue but was benched by coach Shaq Delos Santos to prevent aggravating her back injury.

“Hindi na namin pwedeng pwersahin (si Bernadeth) baka mas lumala,” said Delos Santos. “May scoliosis kasi siya. Bale yun ang problema niya so noong isang araw medyo sumakit na naman daw. Kung pipilitin namin pwede pero siyempre mahaba pa naman ang liga na ‘to so mas pine-prepare namin ang bata and ayaw namin na mas worse pa ang mangyari.”

Without Pons, playmaker Gyzelle Tan was able to distribute the ball evenly with Remy Palma scoring 11 while Jerrili Malabanan got nine. Tan, who skipped Season 77 to recuperate from a knee injury, had 23 excellent sets and three points for the Lady Tams.

Shaya Adorador finished with 23 points but victory still eludes the Lady Warriors, who slid to a 0-2 record tied with University of Sto. Tomas.

Judith Abil had nine markers while Roselle Baliton scored six for UE, which is in a 47-game losing slump dating back to 2012.
