Wendel Miguel led the University of the Philippines to its first win at the expense of University of Sto. Tomas.
University of the Philippines took advantage of University of Sto. Tomas’ penchant for throwing away points off errors as the Fighting Maroons scored their first kill of the season.
Third year veteran Wendel Miguel and freshman John Mark Millete connived to pummel the defense of the Growling Tigers to eke out a 25-17, 22-25, 25-19, 25-21 win Sunday in the 78th UAAP men’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
Miguel smashed 20 kills for his game-high 22 points while Millete, a recruit from Arellano University high school, had 15 points including 12 from attacks to pace UP to a bounce back victory after absorbing a 23-25, 24-26, 23-25 loss last week in the season opener at the hands of the Far Eastern University Tamaraws.
UP tied De La Salle, FEU and Adamson with 1-1 win-loss slate.
The Tigers, who opened their campaign with a three-set defeat handed by defending champion Ateneo de Manila, gave away an atrocious 40 points off their errors and the Espana-based squad went further south with a 0-2 win-loss card tied with University of the East.
Arnold Bautista scored 20 points, including 18 from kills, while Manuel Andrei Medina and Patrick Balse chipped in 15 and 10 markers, respectively, for UST.
