UP held the defending champions to a scoreless draw on opening dayAfter a gritty 90 minutes, the scoreboards remained un-altered, as University of the Philippines held defending UAAP Men's Football champions Far Eastern University to a scoreless draw, Sunday afternoon at the McKinley Hill Stadium in Taguig.
The defending champions were in control early on, but couldn't get their shots to go in. UP had an opening to take an early lead, but the shot went way up the crossbar and out of bounds. Late in the first half, Season 77 leading scorer Eric Giganto had an opportunity to send the Tams into the break with a 1-0 lead, but Maroons keeper Ace Villanueva came up with a huge save to keep the score even.
Villanueva would come up with a couple more big saves for UP in the second half to ultimately hold the defending champions to a scoreless draw.
"Overall, I'm quite satisfied with the performance," UP coach Anto Gonzales told the media following the match.
Gonzales added that the fact that FEU was the team that eliminated them last season was not used as motivation heading into Sunday's matchup.
"I'm not one to tell them na 'O, ito yung tumalo sa inyo last year!' Really, ang gusto ko na focus nila is yung objectives sa game, what they need to do, and kung ano yung kailangan nilang makita. Yun ang focus nila."
For the FEU side, team captain Paolo Bugas said that finishing is something that they need to adjust moving forward.
"Overall, finishing. Kita naman kanina na marami kaming one-on-one chances sa keepers, so finishing lang talaga."
Prior to the match, both teams gathered at center field to offer a moment of silence for UP football scholar Rogie Maglinas, who passed away last February 2 after battling cancer.
The UP squad then paid tribute to Rogie by posing with his #13 jersey, as well as wearing black armbands that read "#ForRogie 13".
