Lady Eagles zero in on win no. 3, hold of the top spot
We don't think about that (the streak) -- Alyssa Valdez

Defending back-to-back champion Ateneo De Manila tries to keep its tight hold of the top spot when the Lady Eagles battle the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws on Wednesday in the 78th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

The Katipunan-based squad extended its winning streak to 20 games but not after weathering a tough challenge given by the University of Sto. Tomas Golden Tigresses, 25-22, 25-20, 21-25, 25-15 win last Sunday for a 2-0 win-loss record in a joint lead with archrival De La Salle University.

"We don't think about that (the streak). Siyempre, it gives us confidence but coach Tai (Bundit) does not stop us from hard training. Iba-iba ang natutunan namin every game," said reigning two-time MVP Alyssa Valdez.

And what they've learned in their first two assignments could help them deal with the dangerous Lady Tamaraws when they take center court at 2:00 p.m.

The clash will air live over ABS-CBN Sports+Action Channel 23, ABS-CBN Sports+Action HD Channel 166 and via livestream at sports.abs-cbn.com/livestream/uaap.

Valdez said that FEU is one tough nut to crack just like every team this season.

“It’s anybody’s ballgame talaga,” said the Queen Eagle, who will be backed by Bea De Leon, Jho Maraguinot, Amy Ahomiro and setter Jia Morado.  “Wala tayong masasabi, it’s really an interesting season.”

The Lady Tams are coming off a 25-18, 25-11, 21-25, 25-14, win against the University of the East Lady Warriors last Sunday to bounce back after suffering a three-set defeat at the hands of the Lady Spikers in their season opener.

FEU hitter Bernadeth Pons’ availability in the match is still a game time decision after sitting out the showdown with UE to rest her aching back. Even if Pons returns to action, her health and condition is still a concern.

With or without Pons, Lady Tams coach Shaq Delos Santos said that they will play smart to score an upset.

“Maglalaro kami ng maayos siyempre. Gagawin namin yung best namin at lahat na magagawa namin,” he said. “Maging smart kapag naglalaro and ‘yung focus namin 100% kailangang ibigay.”
