The National University Lady Bulldogs’ morale skyrocketed after netting a big fish in De La Salle University.

Rejuvenated after scoring a 25-16, 26-24, 14-25, 25-23, upset over the Lady Spikers on Wednesday to tie their victims for the second to third spot with identical 2-1 win-loss cards in the 78th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament, the Lady Bulldogs believe that they can now set their sights on a higher goal -- winning the title.

NU has not tasted the sweetness of a championship since Season 19 (1956-57), the last of the school’s two crowns.

With their performance against DLSU – highlighted by an impressive recovery from a 14-20 deficit in the fourth set – hitter Jorelle Singh is now vocal about the team’s mission to capture the elusive crown.

She and the rest of the Lady Bulldogs believe they can win it all.

“Tingin ko po kaya namin (mag-champion) basta tulu’y tuloy lang po talaga kami. Kaya namin,” said the second year spiker who with 6-foot-5 Jaja Santiago and Myla Pablo formed a three-headed monster that devoured the Lady Spikers by scoring 16 points each.

The victory against the same team that booted them out in Season 77 stepladder semifinals brought back the confidence that left the team when NU received a three-set whipping from three-peat seeking Ateneo de Manila in the season opener.

“Siguro po noong umpisa parang nagda-doubt pa rin kami pero noong nakita po naming kaya namin, parang doon kaya pala namin,” she added.

But that was not the case almost two weeks ago against the Lady Eagles.

The Lady Bulldogs controlled the first two sets early only to watch Ateneo sneak from behind and steal each frame. Devastated, NU was overwhelmed in the third set in an embarrassing start for the Sampaloc-based squad considered as one of the powerhouse teams that could end the Lady Eagles streak.

“Sobrang nag-doubt kami (sa sarili namin),” said Singh of their loss. “‘Yun ‘yung time na nag-usap-usap po kami na ano bang nangyari? Bakit ganoon? Maayos naman po ang nilalaro namin dati?”

“So parang nag-usap-usap kami bakit ganoon ang nga po ang nangyari so parang nag-bonding kami ganoon so ayun na-overcome naman po namin,” she added.

NU recovered the next game against an upstart Adamson University in four sets before shocking DLSU especially in the first set when the Lady Bulldogs led by 10.

“Nu’ng natambakan namin sila sa first set pang ‘dun pa lang sabi naming na parang “Ay ito na pala, kaya na pala namin”. Parang kailangan na lang namin ituluy-tuloy,” said Singh.
