NU scored four goals to pummel UE for their first win of the season
Nico Macapal scored a brace within a stretch of just three minutes to help the National University Bulldogs pummel the University of the East, 4-0 in their opening UAAP Season 78 football match Thursday afternoon at the Moro Lorenzo Gym in Ateneo.
A highly-physical encounter that saw NU get booked for three yellow cards in just the first half, Lawrence Colina sent the Bulldogs into the midgame intermission with a 1-0 advantage after scoring the second-chance goal on a Macapal attempt in the 37th mark.
UE had their chances to score an equalizer but ultimately could not produce a shot, and things didn’t get any easier later on in the second half, when a Jrv Malayo foul led to an easy penalty kick conversion for Paolo Salenga in the 73rd minute.
Macapal finished UE off with a couple of goals in the 86th minute and the 89th minute to propel the Bulldogs to dominant 4-0 win.
“Masaya ako kasi na-motivate namin yung isa’t-isa sa field, at may puso kaming naglaro, tsaka presence of mind,” Macapal told ABS-CBN Sports following the match.
Still, the afternoon’s star knows that there’s still a long way to go before realizing their goal of making it into the post-season. “Kailangan pa naming mag-pursige ng maayos at mag-training ng maayos para makapasok kami sa top-four.”
As it stands, NU, DLSU, and UST all have one win and three points apiece, but the Bulldogs lead the pack with +4 in goal difference, while FEU and UP both have one point, while Adamson, Ateneo, and UE all have one loss.
