The UST Tigers pounced on the Adamson Falcons for their first win of the season
Rookie AJ Pasion introduced himself to the UAAP in style, Thursday afternoon, helping University of Santo Tomas beat Adamson University, 2-1 for their first win in the UAAP Season 78 football tournament.
UST controlled the match early, keeping Adamson on the defensive for majority of the match, until Pasion blasted a goal from the far right to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead in the 40th mark.
Darwin Busimon added to the Tigers lead in the second half with a 52nd minute conversion, volleying the ball over Adamson keeper Carl Viray.
The young Falcons looked to make things interesting late, with Jesuel Pilarca pulling one back in the 80th minute.
With around ten minutes of football left, Adamson tried desperately to find the equalizer, but couldn’t pull it out, as UST came away with a 2-1 win for their first points of the season.
Like they’ve shown towards the end of Season 77, Adamson showed heart again, but came up short.
For UST, who’s trying to get back to the Final Four after coming up short last season, getting an early season win is a big confidence boost, according to mentor Marjo Allado.
“Yung first game kasi, syempre magbu-boost ng confidence nila eh, especially for the young ones, especially yung rookie kanina, naka-goal siya eh, so medyo tumaas yung kumpiyansa nila,” Allado told the media, post-game.
Allado also said that the focus now shifts to their upcoming game against University of the East.
“Yung focus na naming dito is the second game, pero yung result na ‘yun, sa first game, malaking bagay sa ‘amin yun…yung three points na ‘to, magbibigay ulit ng mataas na kumpiyansa sa mga players.”
