The UE men's fencers are on track for a fourth straight UAAP crown.
The University of the East overcame a tough University of Santo Tomas challenge in the individual events to grab the lead in the men’s and women’s divisions in the UAAP Season 78 fencing tournament at the Blue Eagle gym on Thursday.
Gold medals by Christian Jester Concepcion in the sabre event and Michael Nicanor in the foil category boosted the Red Warriors' bid for a fourth straight title.
The other men’s gold went to the Growling Tigers via Noelito Jose, who bested reigning MVP Nathaniel Perez in the epee section in last Wednesday’s opener.
Perez, who lost to Nicanor in an all-UE foil final, accounted his team’s two silver medals.
The nine-peat seeking Lady Warriors also bagged two gold medals, with former MVP Justine Gail Tinio ruling the foil event and Keren Pangilinan topping the epee category.
UST skipper Maylene Pailma survived the UE onslaught by defeating last season’s top rookie Nicole Cortey in the sabre event.
The last two days of competition this weekend will feature the team events in epee, foil and sabre.
