UE's Michael Nicanor earned the gold in the men's foil categoryThe University of the East put an icing on its bid for another championship double in the UAAP Season 78 fencing tournament after winning two of the three team events Friday at the Blue Eagle Gym.
It's all over but the shouting, as the Red Warriors virtually sealed their fourth consecutive title after the men’s sabre team, led by Michael Nicanor and CJ Concepcion, cruised to a 45-17 win over Far Eastern University.
The triumph somehow atoned UE’s narrow 42-45 loss to University of Santo Tomas in men’s epee event.
The Warriors now have three golds, three silvers and two bronze medals, and even the Growling Tigers (2-0-1) prevail in the men’s foil today, the Recto-based fencers will still win the crown by virtue of more silver medals than the latter.
UE, with former MVP Justine Gail Tinio and Keren Pangilinan leading the way, scored a 45-34 victory over University of the Philippines in the women’s foil to assure itself of winning the championship for the ninth straight season.
The Lady Warriors now have a 3-1-2 gold-silver-bronze tally and not even UST sweep the sabre and epee events today could stop UE from claiming the women's title.
The Tigresses are running second with a 1-1-1 haul.
The Red Warriors’ other men’s golds came from Concepcion in the sabre event and Nicanor in the foil category.
UE’s gold in the distaff side came from Tinio, who ruled the foil event and Pangilinan, who topped the epee category.
