Former track runner Rico Andres (30) scored a brace to help FEU beat Ateneo, 5-2
Rookie Rico Andes scored two goals for the defending champion Far Eastern University Tamaraws as they defeated the Ateneo Blue Eagles, 5-2, for their first win of the season.
Andes got on the board early for the Tams, scoring in just the sixth minute, followed by a Val Jurao conversion in the 38th minute to send the Diliman-based booters into the halftime break on top.
Three minutes into the second half, Jurao found the back of the goal again, giving the Tams a comfortable three-goal advantage.
Ateneo’s prized rookie striker Jarvey Gayoso finally introduced himself to the UAAP by pulling one back in the 64th mark, giving the Blue Eagles a little bit of life.
In an entertaining stretch of action, the rookies took center stage as Andes scored his second goal of the match in the 72nd minute, which was immediately answered by Gayoso a minute later.
With the score at 4-2 late in the second half, a Paolo Bugas free kick sealed the deal for FEU as the Tamaraws held on for the 5-2 victory.
Post match, team captain Bugas talked about his team being more motivated after getting held to a scoreless draw in their first outing.
“Motivated kaming lahat dahil sa nangyari nung last game,” Bugas told ABS-CBN Sports.
He also commented on Andes’ breakout performance saying that the rookie, along with Jurao were two of the fastest members of the team.
“Halata naman eh, sila yung pinaka-mabilis sa team namin, so ginamit nila yung speed nila…si Andes talaga, Track and Field before, nag-switch lang siya sa football. Mga late fourth-year high school na siya kinuha ni Master Kim.”
The FEU Tamaraws into first place with four points in two games played, while Ateneo drops to two losses.
