Cellar-dwellers University of Sto. Tomas and University of the East look to snap out of a losing slump when they cross paths Saturday in the 78th UAAP men’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
The Growling Tigers and Red Warriors clash for the first taste of victory in the 8:00 a.m. match.
UST dropped its first two assignments, falling victim to the defending champion Ateneo de Manila Blue Eagles in straight sets in the opener before bowing down to the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons, 17-25, 25-22, 19-25, 21-25, a week ago.
The Tigers, who placed third last year after absorbing a painful Final Four upset at the hands of National University, are in disarray after the departure of their main hitter Mark Alfafara and Romnick Rico, struggling to find their rhythm behind holdovers Arnold Bautista, Patrick Balse, Paul Castillo, Kris Roy Guzman and Jason Sarabia.
Meanwhile, UE’s woes continue after a listless Season 77.
The Red Warriors are in a three-game losing skid with Far Eastern University burying UE further south, 18-25, 22-25, 21-25, just four days ago.
Last year’s Rookie of the Year Edward Camposano and freshman Ruvince Abrot need to get more help from their teammates in order to halt the long drought.
