Marck Espejo scored 35 points to fuel Ateneo de Manila's return into the win column.
Marck Espejo reminded everyone why he’s the reigning back-to-back Most Valuable Player.
The King Eagle displayed his scoring prowess to help the defending champion Ateneo de Manila bounce back from a setback with a narrow 25-20, 23-25, 22-25, 25-21, 15-10, escape against De La Salle in the 78th UAAP men’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
The third year hitter celebrated Valentine’s Day Sunday by scalping Ateneo’s archrival with 35 points and delivered the much-needed offense in the fifth set to avoid a second straight loss.
He peppered the Green Spikers defense with 30 kills, thwarted DLSU’s spikers with four of the team’s 11 block kills and added an ace for a complete game for the Blue Eagles.
Ateneo shared the lead with the Adamson Falcons, who nicked the Blue Eagles erstwhile perfect record, 25-19, 17-25, 22-25, 26-24, 15-13, last Wednesday, with identical 3-1 win-loss records.
Ysay Marasigan finished with 11 points while Karl Baysa and Rex Intal combined for 14 points to help the Katipunan-based squad hand DLSU its second straight defeat after a good start in the season opener.
Green Spikers skipper Raymark Woo challenged Espejo in a scoring duel, blasting 24 points including 21 spikes in DLSU’s 59 total attacks, just a hit short of Ateneo’s output but his effort went down the drain as the Taft-based squad melted in the crucial stretch of the decider.
John Arjay Onia had 19 points for DLSU, which slipped to 1-2 record.
