The UST Golden Tigresses finally close one out to give coach Kung Fu his first win in the senior ranks.
There were some tense moments in the third set but the Golden Tigresses finally pulled through.
Head coach Emilio "Kung Fu" Reyes got the first victory of his collegiate coaching career after the University of Santo Tomas blasted the University of the East Lady Warriors, 25-18, 25-8, 25-23, in the UAAP Season 78 Women's volleyball tournament at the Arena in San Juan, Wednesday.
Up 2-0, the Tigresses lost four match points in the third set as the Lady Warriors threatened to extend the match, 23-24.
However, UST got lucky after a Judith Abil error handed the win for the Espana-based spikers.
"Unti-unti sabi ko nga hindi kami tumitigil na maniwala kasi yun nalang ang pwede namin panghawakan," Reyes said after the Tigresses barged into the win column for a 1-3 record. "Hopefully mai-adjust pa namin yung consistency ng mga bata, ito maganda na morale booster para sa kanila."
Team captain EJ Laure came to play for UST, scoring 16 points on 13 attacks to lead the Tigresses while sparkplug Cherry Rondina added 12.
UST pulled away late to take the opening salvo, 25-18, before showing how dominating they can be in set 2 with a convincing 25-8 win.
The Tigresses were well on their way to another easy third set win before the Lady Warriors woke up and made it a game.
Shaya Adorador led the fight for the Lady Warriors with 10 points as they fall to 0-4. It was UE's 49th straight defeat dating back to Season 74.
