Mikko Mabanag (in white) and three others scored as the Ateneo Blue Eagles recorded their first win of the season.
Team captain Mikko Mabanag scored early in the second half, and three other Blue Eagles followed suit as Ateneo dismantled Adamson, 4-0, Saturday evening at the McKinley Hill Stadium for their first win in the UAAP Season 78 Men’s Football Tournament.
While Ateneo managed to control possession in the first frame, Adamson keeper Carl Viray was holding his own again, keeping the Blue Eagles’ shots from falling and helping keep the score at 0-0 after 45 minutes.
Three minutes into the second half, Mabanag made sure that they wouldn’t get scored on first this time, as he gave Ateneo their first lead of the season.
With momentum finally on their side, the Blue Eagles continued to soar as Jeremiah Rocha doubled their lead in the 55th minute.
Rookie sensation Jarvey Gayoso had two opportunities to add on to the Ateneo advantage, but both attempts were just a bit off. In the 85th minute however, the striker struck gold to push the Katipunan-based three goals ahead.
Another one of Ateneo’s prized recruits, Mashu Yoshioka, put on the finishing touches as he blasted in their fourth goal two minutes into injury time to complete the shutout.
“Sobrang saya, parang it’s a big load off our chests kasi we’ve been trying to win talaga,” Mabanag told ABS-CBN Sports after the match.
After scoring the first goal, an emotional Mabanag ran towards the Ateneo crowd in attendance and pounded on his chest. “That’s what we wanted eh, we wanted to score first, to gain that momentum, and because of that naging emotional ako.”
Ateneo moves to one win and two losses for three points after three games, while the Red Warriors fall to one draw and two losses for one point after three games played.
