The Tigresses are all smiles as they pick up win nunber 2 in signature UST dramatic fashion.
For all the combined offensive brilliance of team captain EJ Laure and Cherry Rondina throughout the game for UST, the Tigresses turned to defense to halt National University in five sets.
Laure denied Myla Pablo twice at the net as the Tigresses survived the Lady Bulldogs, 25-14, 25-18, 17-25, 19-25, 15-12, in the UAAP Season 78 women's volleyball tournament at the MOA Arena Saturday.
Down 6-11 in the deciding fifth set after leading the match 2-0, the Tigresses took advantage of three straight NU errors to come a bit closer.
And with Jaja Santiago, who feasted on the UST defense in the final frame, on the bench due to rotation, it was Laure that had the last roar after rejecting Pablo twice for the game's deciding points, 15-12.
UST won its second straight for a 2-3 record and at the same time, stopping NU's three-game winning run.
"Huling bilin ko sa kanila sa fifth set gagapang ba tayo o tatayo tayo sa pagkakadapa natin," head coach Emilio 'Kung Fu' Reyes said. "Nag-respond naman although naghahabol kami until the end. Napaka-hirap talaga kalaban ng NU yung mga bata ni coach Roger."
The Lady Bulldogs were well on their way to victory as they came back from two sets down and Santiago finally clicking in the final set.
But the Tigresses kept it close enough before surging in the end for a huge follow-up from their first win against UE last Wednesday.
Laure and Rondina each scored 21 points for UST as the Tigresses climbed to 2-3 for the season.
Santiago meanwhile led the game with 23 markers and Pablo added 20 as they dropped to 3-2.
UST dominated the first two sets, jumping on NU as their wing attacks consistently found their way in.
However, the Lady Bulldogs settled down and made it a game after taking sets 3 and four.
