Resuma, Aguilar lead UP to first win of the season
Vince Aguilar (8) scored late in the second half to help power UP past UE for their first win of the season

Rookie Raphael Resuma connected in the first half, and Vince Aguilar converted a goal of his own in the closing minutes of the match to lead the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons past the University of the East Red Warriors, 2-0, Saturday afternoon at the McKinley Hill Stadium for their first win of the UAAP Season 78 Men’s Football tournament.

UP controlled the match from the get go, with captain Daniel Gadia getting some great shots early, but couldn’t quite convert. It was first year player Resuma who gave the Diliman-based squad their first goal of the season, connecting in the 18th minute via an assist from Daniel Saavedra.

UP had more opportunities for a second goal during the remainder of the first half, but UE keeper Lendon          Clores held his own and kept the deficit manageable going into the intermission.

Things got more physical in the second frame, with a number of players from both sides getting laid out on the pitch.

With around eight minutes left in the match, UP earned a golden opportunity for a second goal when Nicolas Cruz got fouled on his way to the goal resulting in a penalty kick, with Aguilar taking the free conversion attempt, which was denied by Clores.

Adding insult to injury for UE was Louie Polinag getting booked for a red card and getting thrown out of the match for getting too aggressive with the official following the penalty call.

In the 89th minute, Aguilar made up for his missed penalty by blasting it through Clores for UP’s second goal of the match.

With five minutes of injury time left, an undermanned  UE tried to pull one back, but to no avail as the Maroons cruised to their first win of the year.

UP head coach Anto Gonzales said that his boys still had a lot of things to work on, as he feels that they “aren’t even close to their best.”

Still, Gonzales hopes that this first win of the season will help fuel the Maroons for the remainder of the season and help take off some of the pressure.

“I hope with this win, at least mawala yung pressure, they will play more relaxed, so let’s look forward to the next game.”

UP moves to one win, one draw, and one loss for four points this season, while UE drops to one draw and two losses in three games for one point.
