Alyssa Valdez drops 23 to lead the Ateneo Lady Eagles to their 23rd straight win.
Deep into the first round of UAAP Season 78, the Ateneo Lady Eagles still have no match in women's volleyball.
Alyssa Valdez was the star of the show and the two-time defending champions easily grounded the Adamson Lady Falcons, 25-16, 25-23, 25-16, at the Mall of Asia Arena Saturday.
After getting a scare in the second set, the Lady Eagles made sure to assert their dominance in the third as Ateneo got its 23rd straight win dating back to Season 76 and 5-0 this year.
Valdez finished with 23 points, displaying her full arsenal of attacks to punish the Lady Falcons.
Her back-to-back aces in the middle of the third set put the game away as she finished with four in total, tied for a team-high with the UAAP's best server Maddie Madayag.
Rookie Pauline Gaston then scored her first UAAP point for the game's final hit, 25-16.
"I hope coach is happy but not contented para ma-push pa rin kami," Valdez said as the champs sweep another game this season. "Kailangan namin maglaro na parang wala kaming alam, yun yung balance namin. Para excited pa rin kami matuto, enjoy lang malayo pa."
Keeping Adamson at bay in the opening set, the Lady Falcons gave the Lady Eagles all they could handle in the second frame.
But back-to-back errors that broke a 23-all tie cost Adamson a chance for an upset.
Amy Ahomiro wound up with a solid nine points for Ateneo while Madayag added eight with four aces.
Jessica Galanza finished with a quiet 11 markers for the Lady Falcons who dropped their fourth straight after a five-set opening-day win over UST.
