The Ateneo Blue Spikers cool down the red-hot UP Maroons.
In the men's volleyball version of the Battle of Katipunan, blue wins again.
Defending champion Ateneo De Manila University put a stop to the red-hot University of the Philippines with a relatively quick 25-18, 25-19, 25-21 victory in UAAP Season 78 action at the MOA Arena Sunday.
The Blue Spikers joined National University on top of the standings with identical 4-1 records.
MVP Mark Espejo led a balanced Ateneo attack as they disposed UP, winners of three straight heading into the matchup, in just one hour and seven minutes.
He and Josh Villanueva combined for 25 points for the defending champions.
It was a nice change of pace for the Blue Spikers after coming off from two straight five-set thrillers. They split those assignments, losing to Adamson and winning against La Salle last week.
The Maroons dropped to 3-2 with idle FEU as they saw their three-game winning streak snapped.
UP looked impressive against National University and the Green Spikers but failed to put something together against Ateneo.
Wendel Miguel was the top scorer for the Maroons with 12.
