NU on the brink of a sweep in UAAP tennis
Reigning MVP Tin Patrimonio helped NU stay unbeaten after seven outings in the UAAP Season 78 women's tennis tournament.

National University bested University of the Philippines, 4-1, in a potential championship preview to move on the cusp of completing another double-round men’s division elimination round sweep in the UAAP Season 78 lawn tennis tournament Sunday at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.

Fritz Verdad, Dheo Talatayod and Leander Lazaro produced victories in singles play while the doubles pair of Al Madrid and Jigo Peña also emerged victorious for the four-peat seeking Bulldogs.

Unbeaten in nine ties and 42 overall since 2013, NU can clinch the twice-to-beat advantage in the title round with a victory against Ateneo in the final day of eliminations at 8 a.m. on Wednesday.

The Bulldogs hold the second longest winning streak in the league behind Adamson University's 70-game winning run in softball.

The second-running Fighting Maroons dropped to 6-3, ahead of the Blue Eagles’ 5-4 record.  UP can claim the second Finals berth if it beats winless La Salle at 11 a.m.

Ateneo suffered a blow on its Finals aspirations with a narrow 2-3 loss to University of the East.

The Lady Bulldogs are also poised for a double-round sweep in the women’s division.

Behind sisters Tin and Clarice Patrimonio, NU extended its perfect run to seven following a 4-1 drubbing of UP.

The Lady Bulldogs gun for the twice-to-beat Finals incentive with a victory against the Lady Eagles at 8 a.m. today.

NU will face University of Santo Tomas, a 4-1 winner over De La Salle, in the championship round.  The Tigresses finished the elims with a 6-2 card, with both losses against the Lady Bulldogs.
