Alfred Valbuena saved UP from a huge upset at the hands of the Red Warriors.
University of the East got its best chance to win in the 78th season of the UAAP men's volleyball tournament but in the end it was not meant to be.
The University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons got back to their winning ways and avoided a huge upset with a 25-21, 25-27, 25-19, 20-25, 15-12 victory over the Red Warriors at the San Juan Arena Sunday.
Up against a completely different UE squad, it took quite an effort for the Maroons to pick up the win and bounce back from their defeats to defending champion Ateneo last week and Adamson last Wednesday.
A kill by Alfred Valbuena sealed the deal for UP as the team improved to 4-3 to end round 1.
"Medyo may problema sa kumpiyansa ang mga bata kaya nahirapan kami," head coach Rod Palmero said. "Na-underestimate ng mga bata eh, sinasabi ko sa kanila hindi muna nila inunahan na galawan ng tama bago nila anuhin na mahina o malakas yung kalaban."
Valbuena finished with 23 points for UP while team captain Wendel Miguel added 19.
The Red Warriors did a great job of engaging the Maroons in a highly-competitive affair but ultimately coming short of a victory anew.
Edward Camposano was sensational for UE, scoring 26 points. Ruvince Abot backed him up with 20 of his own.
