The UP Lady Maroons take care of UST despite a crazy fourth set.
After a crazy ending, it was the Lady Maroons that were a little bit more mature in the battle of two young and talented squads.
University of the Philippines pulled out all the stops in an exciting 25-19, 25-18, 16-25, 32-30 win over the UST Golden Tigresses in the UAAP Season 78 women's volleyball tournament at the San Juan Arena Sunday.
Diana Carlos rejected Cherry Rondina at the net as the Lady Maroons survived an extended fourth set, 32-30, to pick up their third win for the season.
"Yung mga bata makulit. Ang tigas ng ulo eh, kinakabahan obviously so wala more practice," head coach Jerry Yee said. "Ganun eh, hindi pa stable yung team. Nakikita natin masarap sila panoorin but then malayo pa."
Rondina and EJ Laure tried to carry the Tigresses late in the fourth set but rookies Isabel Molde and Carlos had the answers for the Lady Maroons.
A service error by Chloe Cortez put UP at match point for the last time, 31-30, setting up Carlos' clutch rejection of Rondina.
The Lady Maroons were in total control to start the game as they took the first two sets in just under 30 minutes each.
However, the Tigresses woke up just in time to extend the match with a huge 25-16 win in the third.
Carlos led UP with 15 points while Nicole Tiamzon added 14 as the Lady Maroons moved to 3-3 with a chance to go for joint third place on Wednesday.
Molde and Marian Buitre scored eight points each and team captain Kathy Bersola had 11.
The Tigresses, who dropped to 2-4 for the season, were once again paced by Laure and Rondina with 20 points apiece.
