Siguro para rin ipakita sa team ko, sa teammates ko na kaya ko ring i-lead sila kahit setter ako -- Kim Fajardo
Kim Fajardo proved that she can contribute to the De La Salle Lady Spikers outside her role of setting up her teammates on offense.
A true leader, the 22-year-old playmaker rallied her team to victory in the marquee match against the two-time defending champion Ateneo de Manila Lady Eagles on Saturday to earn the nod as ABS-CBN Sports’ 78th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament Player of the Week.
Fajardo came out with a career game, fueling DLSU in shooting down the Alyssa Valdez-led Ateneo Lady Eagles together with their 24-game winning streak in one of the many memorable duels in the collegiate league’s storied rivalry.
She exploded with a personal-best 13 points built on a solid performance on the service line where she ripped the Lady Eagles’ reception with seven aces in the Lady Spikers' 25-22, 25-14, 25-18 shocker over the team that caused them heartaches in their six previous meetings, including two in last year’s championship series.
“Siguro para rin ipakita sa team ko, sa teammates ko na kaya ko ring i-lead sila kahit setter ako,” said Fajardo, who with Cyd Demecillo ruled this season’s UAAP beach volleyball tournament.
Fajardo dished out 16 excellent sets in DLSU’s 33 vicious attack points but her service winners shattered the morale of the Katipunan-based squad. The fourth year player scored three aces in the Lady Spikers’ 8-0 second-set start that set the tempo for the rout.
DLSU improved its record to 5-1 at second place behind 6-1 Ateneo. The Lady Spikers will end its first round campaign on Wednesday against the University of Sto. Tomas.
After six games, Fajardo is still on top of the Best Setter race averaging 8.15 excellent sets per frame ahead of last year’s winner Jia Morado of Ateneo (7.18) and University of the Philippines’ Jewel Lai.
Her aces against the Lady Eagles also propelled Fajardo on top of the Best Server contest overtaking Ateneo’s Maddie Madayag with an average of 0.80 per set. Fajardo sits on the 25th spot in scoring with 44 points from 22 kills, 16 aces and six kill blocks as a testament of her all-around game.
Fajardo edged teammate Majoy Baron, Bernadeth Pons of Far Eastern University, Valdez and Jessica Galanza of Adamson for the weekly citation.
