NEXT IN LINE. Jolo Mendoza isn't going anywhere and will try to justify all the hype surrounding him still in Ateneo.
His current coach called him the “future of Philippine basketball.” Longtime observers referred to him as the “Next Phenom” – and he was taken under the wing of “The Phenom” himself.
Now, Katipunan will get a better look at the talent that has only gotten better inside their campus as Jolo Mendoza will be a member of the Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles next season.
“I’ll still be with Ateneo,” Mendoza told ABS-CBN Sports.
The team captain of the Blue Eaglets is a sweet-shooting guard who can score from everywhere on the court. He averaged 16.6 points – with a 40 percent mark from long-range and an 83 percent from the free throw line – to finish in the top seven of the MVP race.
The Finals MVP from a year ago, Mendoza was expected to contend for this season’s MVP before an injury held him back for half of the elimination round. Katipunan need not worry, however, as he promised, “Okay na yung ankle ko. I’m 100 percent na.”
The Ateneo product will join former Rookie of the Year Arvin Tolentino, transferee CJ Perez, and young studs Matt Nieto and Adrian Wong on the first Blue Eagle squad in a while without Kiefer Ravena and Von Pessumal. Partner-in-crime Gian Mamuyac will also be still alongside him then.
