National University head coach Roger Gorayeb speaks out after the Lady Bulldogs third loss in a row to end the first round of eliminations.
Head coach Roger Gorayeb is taking full responsibility for the recent meltdown haunting National University in the 78th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament.
The Lady Bulldogs dropped their third straight assignment Wednesday, losing in straight sets against the younger University of the Philippines Lady Maroons, 19-25, 21-25, 20-25, in a match that saw Gorayeb bench the veteran duo of Jaja Santiago and Myla Pablo for most part of the third set.
“Wala eh. Ewan ko, ayoko, responsibilidad ko lahat ‘yan,” said Gorayeb. “‘Di sila maglaro ng maayos, responsibilidad ko. Tatanggapin ko ‘yan bilang head coach nila. Wala akong magagawa. Anuman ang problema nila ‘di ko alam.”
The loss pulled NU down to 3-4 win-loss record tied with Adamson University and University of Sto. Tomas at fifth to seventh spot to end the first round of eliminations. The Lady Bulldogs started their campaign by winning three of their first four games before the slump.
Karangalan ba o reputastyon or what? ‘Yun ang at stake dito.”
Gorayeb was particularly upset with his veterans, whose performances dipped during the slump when NU bowed down to University of Sto. Tomas in five sets before getting swept by Far Eastern University.
Against UP, the towering 6-foot-5 middle Santiago registered four points while her national squad teammate Pablo had three markers – both season lows.
“Parang alienated sila sa isa’t isa ‘pag naglalaro,” Gorayeb, who replaced Dong dela Cruz midway of last year’s tournament. “Walang defense, walang block, walang opensa, you can just imagine pati si Jaja wala siyang naitutulong.
With his main guns out of sync in the second set, the fiery mentor called Pablo and Santiago back to the bench and kept them glued to their seats for most of the third set.
“Ilang laro na ‘yung mga veterans walang ma-contribute last game pa,” he said. “Sige ngayon pagbasehan n’yo.
Beterano nga di maka-receive, ba’t di ka maka-receive first time mo?”
He went on saying that the players themselves are destroying everything that they’ve worked for during the offseason.
NU will open the second round on Sunday against UST.
