Youthful University of the Philippines and crawling National University dispute a share of the third spot on Wednesday at the close of the 78th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament first round eliminations at The Arena in San Juan.
The Lady Maroons and Lady Bulldogs are tied at fourth to fifth spot with 3-3 win-loss records, half a game behind the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws.
The 2:00 p.m. match will air live on ABS-CBN Sports+Action Channel 23, ABS-CBN Sports+Action HD Channel 166 and via livestream at sports.abs-cbn.com/livestream/uaap.
With a talented bunch of rookies in its lineup, UP is showing a promising campaign as the Diliman-based squad kept pace in the middle of the pack.
The Lady Maroons are looking for a fitting follow up to their 25-19, 25-28, 16-25, 32-30, victory over an inconsistent University of Sto. Tomas Tigresses last Sunday.
Head coach Jerry Yee will bank on freshmen Diana Carlos, who led UP the last time out with 15 points, Justine Dorog and Isa Molde and to the veteran duo of Nicole Tiamzon and Kathy Bersola to lead the Lady Maroons’ hunt for their first winning run.
On the other hand, what started as a sweet beginning of something big for the Lady Bulldogs when they defeated De La Salle midway in the first round turned sour as the girls of head coach Roger Gorayeb dropped their last two matches.
NU sufered a five-set setback against the Tigresses before falling prey to a surging FEU in a 25-22, 25-21, 25-21 beating last Sunday.
Jaja Santiago, Myla Pablo and Jorelle Singh need to work double time to avoid falling further south of the top four.
