DOMINATION. NU wound up with a spectacular 16-1 standing to end the season.
That last outing which ended with their first loss in the UAAP 78 Juniors Basketball Tournament was nothing but an aberration and Nazareth School of National University made it a point to make that clear.
Once again exploiting their size advantage, the Bullpups went back to bullying De La Salle Zobel, 96-75, to seize their second championship in the last three years on Friday at the San Juan Arena.
Save for a quick fireworks show by Aljun Melecio and Marco Sario early in the second, everything went the way of NU. That couldn’t have been more evident than right before halftime as Winderlich Coyoca’s corner heave beat the buzzer, went over the outstretched arms of two defenders, and found the bottom of the net.
The unbelievable shot ignited a rousing 28-3 onslaught that mounted a 73-40 advantage the Bullpups would never relinquish.
NU owned the paint once more with a 42-16 advantage in inside points and 58-36 advantage in rebounds. However, it was a defense that held their opponents to a 33 percent mark from the field that coach Jeff Napa was truly proud of.
“Talagang pinakita namin identity namin: yung depensa namin,” Napa said in his post-game conference.
Justine Baltazar posted 18 points and 14 rebounds to once again show the way for NU. Posting a double-double in all three championship games, he was also hailed as Finals MVP.
The champions wound up with a spectacular 16-1 standing to end the season.
