UP eyes repeat over slumping DLSU
University of the Philippines wants to duplicate its four-set win over De La Salle University in the first round in their elims rematch.

University of the Philippines aims to climb up on solo fourth spot on Saturday when the Fighting Maroons meet a hard-luck De La Salle University side to start the 78th UAAP men’s volleyball tournament second round eliminations at The Arena in San Juan.

The Maroons share the fourth to fifth spot with last season’s runner up National University after closing the first round with four wins in seven games.

UP and DLSU will clash in the scheduled curtain-raiser at 8:00 a.m.

The Diliman-based squad handed the University of the East Red Warriors its seventh straight loss of the season in a close shaved 25-21, 25-27, 25-19, 20-25, 15-12 escape to end the first round.

Alfred Valbuena had 23 points while Wendel Miguel and rookie John Millete finished with 19 and 13 markers, respectively, to lead the Maroons to victory and snap a two-game slide.

The Green Spikers, on the other hand, are looking to end a six-game losing streak that nailed them in seventh spot after opening the season with a straight sets win over UE.

Despite an 18-point output by Raymark Woo, who is second this season in the scoring department behind Ateneo’s Marck Espejo, DLSU received a straight sets, 23-25, 21-25, 19-25, beating at the hands of University of Sto. Tomas Tigers last Wednesday.

The Maroons defeated the Green Spikers, 25-23, 25-21, 21-25, 27-25, last February 17.
