University of Sto. Tomas middle blocker Marivic Meneses (No. 18) speaks out about her sub-par performance in the 78th UAAP women's volleyball tournament.

University of Sto. Tomas middle blocker Marivic Meneses’ presence in the 78th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament is hardly felt by the Golden Tigresses.

The third year player is struggling to equal the performance she showed last year when she won the Season 77 Best Blocker award.

In the first round, Meneses collected a total of 29 points and was out of the blocking department’s top 10. Add her six points on Saturday’s 25-17, 25-23, 25-16 win over University of the East to start the second round, Meneses' total of 35 points is still a long way to reach the 122 points – including 47 kill blocks - she accumulated last year.

Parang ‘yung laro ko minsan OK minsan parang talagang wala,” said Meneses, niece of PBA legend and Jose Rizal University men's basketball team coach Vergel Meneses.

“Marami kasi akong iniisip.

Head coach Kung Fu Reyes said that Meneses might still be battling with the psychological effects of the right knee injury she suffered last year.

Menesesa after her Asian U-23 Championship stint May last year, undergone a knee surgery to repair a broken patellar tendon and spent two months of the offseason under rehabilitation.

“Baka iniinda pa rin niya ‘yung tuhod niya,” said Reyes. “’Yung lateral movement niya very limited. Hindi pa siya ganoon ka-agile.”

The mentor added they are trying to help Meneses get back to her old form.

“More on psychological na lang talaga ‘yung kay Ria e. Pinipilit namin siyang tulungan, kaya nga kami nandito para to guide her na maging maayos at ipalala o i-remind sa kanya kung ano ‘yung nagiging kulang,” he said.

“In one year maraming pwedeng mangyari.
