Last year's poor finish has lit a fire under the UST booters
UST has steamrolled their way into second place so far this season, and it's all thanks to last year's dismal finish

Six games into the UAAP Season 78 Men’s Football tournament, arguably the biggest surprise in terms of team performance would be the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers, who have steamrolled their way into second place with an unbeaten record consisting of four wins and two draws.

In their last three outings, the Tigers have dispatched Ateneo, one-time top seed National University, and defending champions Far Eastern University.

What may be more impressive is that they’ve done it without their star striker from last season, Steven Anotado, who’s recovering from an ACL injury.

The Tigers have become one of the league’s most exciting teams to watch this season, and head coach Marjo Allado says that last season’s poor campaign has been serving as the fuel for this season’s impressive run.

“Pag pumupunta sila sa game, yung psychological ano nila dito is ‘hindi tayo pwede magpa-talo’ kasi last year, we’re number six, so ‘yan yung motivation dun eh, yung poor performance namin last year kasi parang nasisira yung record ng UST eh. “ Allado told ABS-CBN Sports after their win against Ateneo, Saturday evening.

For the Thomasian booters, the mentality is to get the win, no matter how small or how big the winning margin may be, bottom line: winning is winning.

“Yung gusto nilang patunayan ngayon, as much as possible, kung pwedeng manalo, kahit 1-0 lang, okay na kami eh. Yun ung motivation nila going into the game. “

With one game left in the first round against UP, the Tigers can say that they’ve tested everyone this season, and many would argue that they’ve surpassed expectations, especially coming last season’s sixth place finish, their worst in decades.

With half the season almost in the books, Allado reminds his boys to keep their focus and not let their impressive start go to waste by slacking off or letting up.

“Push lang, hindi pwede mag-give in, kasi andito na tayo eh, sayang yung foundation natin, pag bumigay tayo, sayang yung mga points na ipinundar natin, mawawala lang.”

If the Espanya-based squad keeps playing the way their playing right now, a post-season appearance should be within reach.
