SHOULDER TO CRY ON. All Aljun Melecio needed to move on from their championship defeat was a hug from his father.
Right after the final buzzer sounded on the 78th Season of the UAAP Juniors Basketball Tournament and Nazareth School of National University just shrugged off his Herculean effort, Aljun Melecio went straight to one person who meant more to him the game.
Not any of his teammates. Not the coach who nurtured him until he blossomed. Not the girl who surprised him the last time around.
No, the season MVP cried on the shoulders of his father.
After the Junior Archer set to become a Green Archer changed clothes and exited the dugout, it was also his father who was the first person waiting for him outside. Asked about the touching moment they shared, the younger Melecio told ABS-CBN Sports, “Siya nagturo sa akin mag-basketball e. Nung magkayakap na kami, naramdaman kong okay na, move on na.”
The elder Melecio, Jun as he is fondly called, shared that no words were spoken between the two of them and the embrace was all they needed to make their love known for each other. “Wala naman akong sinabi at umiyak lang siya sa akin. Alam ko naman si Aljun, kapag masaya siya, yumayakap at umiiyak,” he said.
He then continued, “Ako naman, nandito lang ako palagi para sa kanya.”
For his part, Jun said that not only was his hug meant to relieve his heartbroken son, it was also meant to express how proud the former is of where the latter finds himself now. “Dati, nung seven-years-old siya, dinadala ko siya sa mga basketbolan tapos sinasabi ko na kapag sasama ka, bibilhan kita ng maraming pagkain,” he recalled.
Indeed, Aljun Jay Melecio has come far from his roots in Bukidnon, becoming the first-ever DLSZ player to be hailed as season MVP as well as having a couple of 40-point outings under his belt. And in his father’s view, it’s only the start as he said, “Dati, lagi na naming pinag-uusapan na kelangan gumawa ka ng pangalan sa Maynila. Masaya kami na unti-unti nang natutupad yun.”
