University of Sto. Tomas sends University of the East to a 53-game losing streak.
Except for the challenge posed by University of the East in the second set, University of Sto. Tomas easily collected its second straight win, 25-17, 25-23, 25-16 to move up the standings on Saturday to open the second round of the 78th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
The Golden Tigresses, who had a shaky second frame where they needed to fight back from an early four-point deficit, improved to 4-4 win-loss record and in the process added more woes to an already bruised pride of the Lady Warriors sending the Recto-based squad to a 53-game losing slump.
UE gave UST a scare in the second frame with an 8-4 run. The Espana-based volleybelles played catch up until the middle of the frame before skipper EJ Laure’s hit gave the Tigresses the lead, 18-17.
The Lady Warriors tied it at 23 before UST capped the set with two straight points including an off the block kill by Laure, who finished with 15 points with all but one coming off kills.
League-leading scorer Cherry Rondina had 12 markers for UST, which is coming off a straight sets win over De La Salle to finish the first round and duplicated its three sets demolition of UE in their first meeting.
But head coach Kung Fu Reyes was far from satisfied with his team.
"'Yun ang isang problema (sumabay kami sa laro ng UE). Ewan ko parang yung cloud nine. Ang sabi ko anong karapatan nating mapunta sa cloud nine, tingnan nyo ang standings natin," he said. "OK nanalo tayo ng isang laro. Isang laro lang naman ang naipanalo natin pero nasa bottom pa tayo, pakigising."
The Lady Warriors dropped to 0-8 slate and has yet to taste a win since their losing streak started back in Season 74.
Shaya Adorador led UE with nine markers.
