UP and NU battled to a scoreless draw in UAAP Season 78 Men's Football action
Niether squad found the back of the net within the 90 minute regulation period as University of the Philippines and National University figure in a scoreless draw, Saturday afternoon at the McKinley Hill Stadium in Taguig.
Heading into the matchup, UP had won their last three matches and continued their strong play in the first half, as they dominated the possession, but couldn’t muster up a conversion despite their numerous chances.
A couple of halftime adjustments paid off for the Bulldogs, as they managed to play better in the second frame, and even had some clean chances that had the Maroon fans in attendance on the edge of their seats.
The best chance for NU came from Francis Abalunan, unfortunately for the Bulldogs, his late attempt in the second half bounced off the crossbar and away from the goal.
After a gritty 90 minutes, the scoreboards remained unchanged at 0-0, with both teams earning a point.
For UP head coach Anto Gonzales, it all goes back to working on their finishing, as he believes that they could have been up two goals in the first half of the match. He also believes that the Maroons are still adjusting to playing without a designated striker like Jinggoy Valmayor, who anchored the Maroons offense for the previous five seasons.
Maroons defender Ian Clarino echoed the sentiments of his coach, saying that Valmayor was indeed a big factor for the Maroons.
“Malaking talaga siyang kawalan sa amin, so kailangan mag-step up yung attacking namin.
For the NU side, the draw breaks a two-game slide and puts them back on the board as they pull even with FEU for the fourth spot.
“One game at a time, focus lang kami sa next game para maka-kuha ng points ulit,” Bulldogs skipper Paolo Salenga said post match.
