After downing a powerhouse team, University of Sto. Tomas seeks to keep their momentum going as they face winless University of the East to start the second round.
A confident University of Sto. Tomas side gun for its second straight win against a University of the East team that is low on morale to open the 78th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament second round eliminations on Saturday at The Arena in San Juan.
Behind league-leading scorer Cherry Rodina and sophomore EJ Laure, the Tigresses clawed their biggest win so far in the season when the Espana-based squad shocked De La Salle University in straight sets to end the first round last Wednesday.
UST head coach Kung Fu Reyes hopes that the momentum of their morale-boosting 25-21, 25-22, 25-21 demolition of DLSU will turn the Tigresses’ season around to achieve their initial goal of making it to the Final Four for the first time after missing the cut in the last three years.
“Wala namang nakakasigurado ngayon. ‘Pag dating sa second round sana mataas ang morale ng mga bata para makuha namin 'yung target namin,” he said.
Standing in their way are the Lady Warriors, a team composed of players that have yet to taste victory in their collegiate careers.
The match is scheduled at 2:00 p.m. and will air live on ABS-CBN Sports+Action Channel 23, ABS-CBN Sports+Action HD Channel 166 and via livestream at sports.abs-cbn.com/livestream/uaap.
UST is on a three-way logjam in fifth to seventh place with 3-4 record tied with National University and Adamson University.
After a 0-3 start, the Tigresses barged in the win column in a rout against the Lady Warriors, 25-18, 25-8, 25-23, last February 17.
UST wants to duplicate that victory and send UE reeling to its eight straight loss and 53rd overall.
The Lady Warriors are coming off a 22-25, 22-25, 19-25 loss against Adamson to end the first round. UE has not tasted a win since Season 74.
