The UST Growling Tigers remained unbeaten after dispatching Ateneo in UAAP Football action
Rookie AJ Pasion and Darwin Busmion both scored in the second half to propel the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers past the Ateneo Blue Eagles, 2-1, Saturday evening at the McKinley Hill Stadium in Taguig.
With the day’s previous match between NU and UP going to a scoreless draw, it looked like things would be heading in the same direction for UST and Ateneo, as they headed into the halftime break scorless.
Pasion would provide the spark for the Growling Tigers though, as the rookie striker only needed a minute into the second half to give the Thomasians a 1-0 advantage.
With Ateneo’s rookie striker Jarvey Gayoso coming in at the 48th minute, an equalizer was within reach, but Darwin Busmion made pulling even a bit more difficult for the Ateneans, as he added a goal of his own in the 60th minute to push UST up two-nil.
Unfortunately for the Ateneo, their first goal of the match came at injury time, courtesy of a penalty conversion from skipper Mikko Mabanag.
With a little time left, the Ateneans tried to pull out one more goal to tie things up, but it was too little too late, and the UST Tigers came away with the 2-1 victory.
After the match, UST coach Marjo Allado commended the performance of Pasion, who’s slowly transforming into the Tigers’ lead striker, as well as the leadership of returning senior Ronald Batisla-ong, who has made it a point to be a “kuya” on the field.
“Mas okay talaga na may senior sa loob, naglalaro, nag-cocommand…napapakita namin as seniors yung pagiging leader sa loob,”
The win pushes UST’s record to four wins and two draws for 14 points, just behind DLSU who has 16 points.
Ateneo on the other hand drops to two wins and four losses for six points.
