Lady Maroons hand Lady Eagles' first back-to-back losses
University of the Philippines scored a huge upset over Ateneo de Manila.

Super rookie Isa Molde served as the messiah for the University of the Philippines in the “Battle of Katipunan”.

Molde powered the Lady Maroons to end nine years of futility against Ateneo de Manila as UP handed the defending back-to-back champion Lady Eagles their first consecutive losses in three years, 19-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-22, Sunday in the 78th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament second round at The Arena in San Juan.

The Lady Maroons collected third straight win and cemented their position at third spot with a 5-3 win-loss card, pulling the Lady Eagles down to a tie with rival De La Salle University at 6-2 slate in a share of the top spot.

Molde, a recurit from Hope Christian School, posted 15 points coming from 10 attacks, four service aces and a block kill to fuel the Lady Maroons' biggest upset of the season against a team reeling from a straight sets setback at the hands of DLSU a week ago that ended its 24-game winning streak.

"Naiingit kami sa mga upsets d'yan e. So gumagaya lang kami," said head coach Jerry Yee. "No really, we tried to explain to the girls na hindi naman tayo 'yung one week na medyo nagda-doubt e. 'Yung kabilang team 'yun kasi may first loss sila since coach Tai (Bundit) got on board so medyo matagal-tagal na rin 'yun so I'm sure may konting duda (sila), yun ang ibinenta ko sa girls. It's all about selling the strategy to the girls."

"So ayun, they bought it naman medyo kumapit so sinuwerte tayo," he added.

Another rookie Diana Carlos made an impact in the game with three kill blocks for a total of 12 points while veterans Nicloe Tiamzon and Kathy Bersola scored 12 and 10 markers, respectively, for the Lady Maroons.

After turning the tides in their favor in the second and third sets, UP's confidence was skyhigh racing to an early lead in the fourth frame. The Lady Maroons reached matchpoint, 24-19, on an Alyssa Valdez service error.

Ateneo behind their legion of fans, saved three matchpoints only to see Molde shut the door with an off the block kill to seal the game.

UP ended a 17-game head-to-head losing streak to Ateneo since winning their match in the second round of Season 69 last January 17, 2007 in a 37-35, 22-25, 20-25, 25-17, 15-12 decision.

It is the Lady Eagles’ first back-to-back defeats since bowing down to DLSU in Season 76’s end of first round and the start of the second round.

The reigning back-to-back Most Valuable Player Valdez finished with 19 points while Jho Maraguinot had 15 for Ateneo, which committed 35 errors.
