UP 'imitates' DLSU in upset win over Ateneo
Gumaya lang kami sa La Salle -- UP coach Jerry Yee

University of the Philippines head coach Jerry Yee has De La Salle University mentor Ramil De Jesus to thank for showing Ateneo de Manila’s Achilles’ heel.

Adopting the pattern and strategy that Lady Spikers tactician used in putting an end to their bitter rivals’ 24-game winning streak at the close of the first round a week ago, Yee and his girls handed the defending back-to-back champion Lady Eagles their first consecutive losses in three years, 19-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-22, Sunday.

The Lady Maroons exploited Ateneo’s weak control of the first ball and floor defense to pull off one of the biggest upsets in the 78th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament.

DLSU arrested its six-game losing slump to Ateneo dating back to the last two games of Season 76 Finals eight days ago in a straight-set mastery of the Lady Eagles, 25-22, 25-14, 25-18, slicing 13 service aces to frustrate the Loyola-based squad.

“Gumaya lang kami sa La Salle. They were serving long, they were serving hard,” said Yee, whose squad improved to 5-3 win-loss record to strengthen their grip of the solo third spot.

UP was able to score seven service winners.

“Of course nand’yan na nga ang template for beating the team so you have to use it kapag available,” added Yee. “So yun lang naman e. Ipinakita sa atin, you should follow.

Though the Lady Eagles posted 33 digs and 29 excellent receptions, the Lady Maroons’ heavy services gave Ateneo a hard time to execute their plays.

“Hindi sila maka-execute ng play nila so nagmukhang maganda ang plays natin because it came sa mga easy passes,” said Yee. “So with all due respect medyo hindi ‘yung A-game nila (ang nilaro ng Ateneo). Hindi ‘yung A-palo nila ang nand’yan so maganda ang execution natin kahit papaano.”

It is UP’s third straight win while pulling the Lady Eagles down to a tie with the Lady Spikers at 6-2 slate in a share of the top spot.

UP ended a 17-game head-to-head losing streak to Ateneo since winning their match in the second round of Season 69 last January 17, 2007 in a 37-35, 22-25, 20-25, 25-17, 15-12 decision.

It is the Lady Eagles’ first back-to-back defeats since bowing down to DLSU in Season 76’s end of first round and the start of the second round.
