Isa Molde of University of the Philippines is the fifth recipient of the 78th UAAP women's volleyball Player of the Week citation.
University of the Philippines head coach Jerry Yee is already reaping the rewards of landing the best bunch of recruits in the 78th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament.
The brightest jewel in Yee’s collection of seven rookies is Isa Molde.
Fearless and filled with moxie without getting overly zealous, the Hope Christian School product showed that she’s heading to superstar level with two superb performances that helped cement the Lady Maroons’ position at the third spot of the standings in the week that was.
Molde averaged 14 points, including an 11-kill norm, in the Diliman-based squad’s two huge victories, enough to get the ABS-CBN Sports’ unanimous nod as the fifth recipient of the UAAP Women’s Volleyball Player of the Week citation.
The 17-year-old hitter delivered 13 points in the Lady Maroons’ straight sets demolition of National University Lady Bulldogs, 25-19, 25-21, 25-20, last Wednesday to end the first round of eliminations in the second of UP’s three-game winning streak.
Molde collected her points from 12 attacks and a block kill.
She followed it up with a bigger explosion four days after, when Molde uncorked a team-high 15 points in a rousing 19-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-22, upset over the two-time defending champion Ateneo de Manila Lady Eagles to improve to 5-3 win-loss record.
Molde had an all-around game with 10 booming smashes, four service aces and a kill block on top of six excellent digs to power the Lady Maroons in snapping a 17-game, nine-year head-to-head drought against their Katipunan neighbors.
“Masaya siyang turuan so ayan good game kahit papaano. (I’m) very happy with the win,” said the proud mentor, who molded Molde into a dangerous weapon since high school.
Molde edged teammate and toughest rival for the Season Rookie of the Year award Diana Carlos by a hairline for the weekly recognition.
Carlos, a recruit from Sta. Cruz Academy, finished with 12 points and seven digs against NU before posting 12 markers and five digs in the Ateneo joust.
“Nagko-contest sila. Pagandahan daw sila ng laro which is a very, very good friendly competition to have inside our team, maganda ‘yun,” said Yee. “Anytime you have two players na nagpapagalingan, magaling, maganda yun.”
Molde joined the elite POW club with reigning back-to-back Most Valuable Player Alyssa Valdez of Ateneo, De La Salle’s Kim Fajardo, Lady Bulldog Jaja Santiago and University of Sto. Tomas’ Cherry Rondina.
