National University built momentum heading to its marquee match up against defending champion Ateneo de Manila on Sunday.
Behind Madzlan Gampong's 21 point explosion, the Bulldogs barked their way to back-to-back victories in a 25-20, 18-25, 25-21, 27-26 conquest of University of the East Wednesday in the 78th UAAP men's volleyball tournament at the MOA Arena in Pasay City.
Coming off the heel of ending a two-game slide, NU improved its record to 6-3 while in the process sent the Red Warriors reeling to a 0-9 slate trapped in the cellar despite showing stiff resistance in the second and fourth sets.
Gampong displayed an all-around effort on offense, hammering 18 kills to go with a pair of kill blocks and an ace for the Bulldogs, who are building up confidence to avenge a three-set defeat to Ateneo in the first round.
Bryan Bagunas and James Natividad added 17 and 12 points, respectively, for NU while Kim Malabunga had nine markers. Bagunas had 13 perfect receives and four digs to help Ricky Marcos, who had 32 receptions and 17 digs, man the floor.
The Bulldogs peppered the Red Warriors with 53 vicious spikes with 27 coming from skipper and veteran playmaker Vince Mangulabnan's excellent sets.
Once again Season 77 Rookie of the Year Edward Camposano and freshman Ruvince Abrot delivered for UE.
However, Camposano's 18 points and Abrot's 17 were not enough to save the Red Warriors from absorbing their 23rd straight loss.
